OMG Oreo Cheesecake Frosting

oreo frosting

Oreo frosting, in my mind, has to be made with cream cheese. As I mentioned when I made my homemade Oreo cookies, I love Oreo cheesecake and I thought that I could, to some degree, replicate the feel of a good Oreo cheesecake in the frosting for my Oreo cupcake.  Oreo cheesecake frosting was created!

Oreo cupcake

My Oreo cupcake with a built-in cup for milk – topped with Oreo cheesecake frosting.

I started with a basic cream cheese frosting and mixed in Oreos and a splash of vanilla extract.

Homemade Oreos

My homemade Oreo cookie.

The Oreo cheesecake frosting is perfect on Oreo cupcakes, but it would also be great on any chocolate or vanilla cupcake. Even a box mix cupcake would be kicked up many notches if you topped it with homemade Oreo cheesecake frosting.

Oreo Cheesecake Frosting Recipe

Oreo Cheesecake Frosting

Oreo Cheesecake Frosting

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup butter, room temperature
  • 3-4 cup powdered sugar (use more or less depending on how stiff you want the frosting to be)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup crushed Oreos (I crushed them in the food processor to be sure the pieces would be really tiny and wouldn't get stuck in my piping tips. If you are going to spread the frosting, it might be fun to use bigger chunks of Oreo. Also, I used my homemade Oreo cookies which aren't standard size - so I can't tell you exactly how many Oreos 3/4 of a cup is.)

  1. Whip cream cheese and butter until light and fluffy.
  2. Mix in powdered sugar one cup at a time.
  3. Add vanilla extract.
  4. Gently stir in crushed Oreos.

I did Oreo frosting once and had a really, really tough time using any kind of tip to make a swirly top for the cupcake. I must have had the oreos too chunky! Looks great :)

  9. Stef March 19, 2009 at 5:49 am #

You can use any brand of cream cheese – just make sure not to get a kind that is already whipped.

    Hey everyone!

For the people who were asking about how many oreos are needed for 3/4 of a cup:

I went to the grocery store (you can probably find them at your nearest 7-11 convenience store as well!) and found a cup of oreos that contains EXACTLY 3/4 cup when crushed! It’s called “Mini Oreos Bite-size Go-Pak” They’re not as big as normal oreos, but i’m assuming it’ll work out to be ok!

I am looking for a yummy icing for Crust crumbling and the inner layers of a cake. They say to use a butter cream frosting. This sounds so delicious! Do you think this could work as a replacement?

  19. Stef August 23, 2011 at 6:25 pm #

    Anon – I don’t see why not!

  20. Anonymous September 30, 2011 at 12:50 pm #

    how many does it make?

  21. Stef October 8, 2011 at 6:22 pm #

Anon – It depends on how big a swirl you make. With a medium sized swirl, I can easily frost 12 cupcakes.

My daughter Morgan loves Oreo cookies! We will be making the oreo filling by using the “Whonu nutrition oreo cookies” instead of using the regular mini oreos! I will let you know. Thank you for all your recipes!

    HI Stef!

I love using cream cheese frosting on EVERYTHING! but for some reason i can never get it right…it always turns out way too runny and i end up using a lot more confectioners sugar than i should, to thicken it up and it just turns out a horrible, way-too-sweet mess! When you whip the cream cheese, should it end up having the texture of whipped cream? Could I possibly be over or under whipping it?

    Pleeeeeeeease help!
    Regards from South Africa:)

3-4 Cups of sugar sounds like a lot!
Last time I used that much for icing, it turned out really, really, sweet. Too sweet.
I’ve been seeing 3-4 cups of icing sugar on a lot of frosting recipes lately but I just can’t get my head around it. Why so much icing sugar?!?!

  29. Anonymous August 19, 2012 at 11:56 pm #

make sure you include butter when whipping. Also check that both the butter and cream cheese are at room temperature; don’t try to melt it or whip it when it’s still too cold.
You shouldn’t need to use too much sugar and you should be able to enjoy delicious, cream cheese frosting on anything! Good Luck! :)

Hey! This one looks a winner. My son who is a huge Oreo fan is bound to love it! Am wondering though- if I want to fill and frost an 8″ cake, will I need to double the recipe?
