Banana boats are one of my favorite camping treats. Just slice a banana down the center, stuff it with chocolate, wrap it in foil, and throw it into the fire for a few minutes.
If your banana can balance on its own, great; you can skip this step. Most bananas, though, will fall over if you try to stand them up. To solve this problem, cut a thin layer of the peel off of the bottom of the banana to create a flat space. This will enable your banana pirate ship to stand without toppling.
Cut the bottom end off of your banana - about two inches from the end. Reserve this piece. It will be your sail.
Slice the large piece of banana lengthwise through the top skin, but not all the way through to the bottom skin.
Stuff chocolate pieces and chocolate-covered coconut pieces into the slit.
Wrap in foil.
Bake for 15 minutes or until chocolate is melted.
While the banana is baking, start making your sail. Slice the top portion of the banana peel from the banana end that you reserved. Don't cut all the way through to the bottom of the peel.
Take out the piece of banana. Eat it (we actually fed it to our chickens).
Flatten the banana peel. Don't worry about how it looks on the back side. This isn't the part that people will be looking at.
Slide the skewer into the yellow/outside of the banana peel at the bottom of the middle section.
Push the skewer out the white/inside of the banana peel at the top of the peel.
Tape pirate decorations to the outside of the sail.
When the chocolate banana pirate ship is done in the oven, stick the sail in and serve warm.
Notes
You can experiment with the banana fillings. I encourage you to use Fair Trade products, but any chocolate, candy, marshmallow, or even cookie crumbs would work well!
