Pecan Pie Bars Made With Maple Syrup

These pecan pie bars have an inviting shortbread crust with a touch of oatmeal for texture, and they’re topped with delectable pecan pie filling. They’re sweet, buttery, salty, earthy, and people can’t get enough of them – thanks to a secret ingredient.

Pecan pie bars are perfect for events where you’d typically make a pecan pie. These have the advantage of being bite-sized – and you can cut them into even smaller squares for smaller people!

Why These Pecan Pie Bars Work

Pecan pie bars are great because they are bite-size pieces of the pie they’re named after. They have a great crunch, sweetness, and can be eaten without a fork.

These bars get their crunch from both the shortbread crust as well as the pecans.

The pecan pie bars are made without corn syrup. Corn syrup typically provides sweetness, and holds pecan pie together after baking. I substitute maple syrup to get that same texture, but with a much better flavor.

Finally, BBQ sauce is the secret ingredient that makes these bars so much more interesting than their counterparts. It adds a smoky and tangy flavor that people won’t be able to figure out unless you tell them.

How to Make Pecan Pie Bars

Start making these bars by forming a shortbread crust:

  • Mix butter, sugar, flour, oats, and baking powder together in a bowl.
  • Press the shortbread crust into the bottom of a greased 3 quart baking dish.
  • Bake for 20 minutes at 350 F or until the crust just begins to brown.

Next, prepare the maple pecan pie filling:

  • Heat maple syrup, BBQ sauce, unsalted butter, and milk in a saucepan on medium heat.
  • When the mixture begins to boil, mix in chopped pecans and remove from heat.
  • Pour filling over the prepared shortbread crust.

To finish, bake the pecan pie bars in the oven for 30 minutes.

Cut into squares and serve when they’re cool.

A Variation of These Bars

You’ll see in the photos above that I made two different styles of bars. One is straightforward – you make the recipe as described above where there are two layers: shortbread and topping.

Another is slightly more complicated, and one that I prefer due to the addition of shortbread crumb topping.

  1. Prepare a shortbread crust.
  2. Add the pecan pie filling without pecans.
  3. Cover with shortbread crumbs.
  4. Top with crushed pecans.

The flavor of both versions is identical; the only difference is the crumb topping. The simple version’s main advantage is that it’s cleaner to eat. I prefer crumb topping everywhere, and I don’t mind picking crumb topping and pecans off of my plate, so I always make that variation. The choice is yours!
