Dairy-Free Chocolate Frosting

Go on – eat spoonful after spoonful of this dairy-free chocolate frosting – it’s OK.  The dairy-free frosting is made using the fat from nuts (cashews specifically).  To create this Nutella-like frosting that’s light, decadent, sinless, and vegan-friendly, simply soak cashews overnight to soften them, then blend the cashews with water, a touch of brown sugar, and cocoa powder.  Watch out: once you try it, this dairy-free frosting might permanently overthrow your current chocolate buttercream to become your new favorite frosting.  I made more dairy-free chocolate frosting than I needed and Jonathan and I have been spreading it on graham crackers all week.

I go through phases with my cocoa powder choices.  I have a whole cocoa powder basket in my pantry.  These days, I’m on a TCHO kick.  You can smell how special this cocoa powder is from the moment you pop open the can.  Do a sniff-off with your regular brand and you’ll be amazed by the difference.  Quality cocoa powder has a huge impact on any chocolate frosting.

Sinless Smooth and Sweet Dairy-Free Chocolate Frosting


  • 3 cups unsalted cashews soaked overnight in a bowl of water
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder


  1. Blend all ingredients until smooth.
  2. Pipe or spread on anything and everything!

Recipe Notes

The frosting is not overly stiff. If you prefer a stiffer frosting, use less water.

    That sounds like a delicious frosting or spread, I love Nutella. However, it’s not one I can use for treats I make for friends, got a couple of serious nut allergies among them. Guess that means all for me when I make this? Yum!

    would you be able to use cashew meal instead of the nuts themselves… and would coconut milk (the canned thick stuff, not the thinned out perserved cartons) instead of water make it a bit creamier? its my favorite things to cook/bake with since i’ve ventured into paleo recipes.
