One of my favorite ways to serve apples to to bake them in a waffle iron! They take just one minute to make and they are super healthy!

When the apples come out of the waffle iron, they are hot, soft, and chewy. We eat them immediately!

Ingredients

You will need an apple, a little sugar, and cinnamon (optional).

You will also need a waffle iron to make this recipe.

Some of my favorite apples to use are:

  • Honeycrisp
  • Gala
  • Granny Smith
  • Jonathan

Choose an apple that is nice and crisp. You don’t want one that will turn into mush when baking. For a more complete list of apples, check out Bon Appetit’s article on the best apples to bake with.

How It’s Made

Preheat your waffle iron.

Slice apples in rings to just over 1/4″ thick.

Dust with cinnamon and sugar. The baked apples are good on their own, but they are even better with cinnamon and sugar.

Always make sure to grease your waffle iron. You can use a non-stick baking spray or simply run a butter stick over the hot waffle iron.

Place one apple slice in each section of the waffle iron, close, and bake for one minute. There is no need to flip.

Expert Tips and FAQs

What type of waffle iron works best?

I found that both the regular and the deeper Belgian waffle irons [paid link] work well for waffle iron baked apples.

Can you bake other fruit in a waffle iron?

Yes! Try this same technique with pineapple (as an alternative to candied pineapple).

Do you need the sugar?

If your apples are nice and sweet, you can leave off the sugar.

What can I garnish these with?

For a special treat, try drizzling them with caramel sauce or dusting with powdered sugar.

Ingredients

  • 1 apple sliced into rings just over 1/4" thick
  • 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon optional

Instructions

  • Heat waffle iron.
  • Spray with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Optionally rub both sides of apple slices with sugar and cinnamon. This isn't necessary (the apples are plenty sweet), but it does make them look better because the sugar caramelizes and the cinnamon just works perfectly with apples.
  • Place one apple slice in each section of the waffle iron.
  • Close the waffle iron and cook for about a minute or until the apples look waffled.
  • Repeat until you are out of apple slices. Serve warm.

Notes

Use a crisp apple for best results.
Always make sure to grease your waffle iron to keep the apple slices from sticking.

I loved this so much!! This worked so well! The apples were delicious! I even served them to my husband on Father’s Day, he was asking where I got them and I told him that a made them and he was amazed! Haha! I will be making these a lot more often!

  3. Pacosays:

They taste good, but make a mess of the waffle iron!
Carmelized sugar sticks like glue to the
surface , even with liberal use of non-stick cooking spray.
Cute idea, but I will be using microwave instead from now on.

    • Stefsays:

We use a damp paper on a warm waffle iron to clean it. Of course, the microwave is easier, it just isn’t quite as cute and they come out a little differently.

  4. Kristinesays:

I was thinking maybe shredding the apple stuff (food processor) and maybe some egg, a little almond flour, honey, cinnamon, etc.

  5. Juliettesays:

Apples were Delicious! (I attempted bananas however they do not work in a waffle iron— turned to goo!)

    • Stefsays:

How ripe were the bananas? I bet if you used not so ripe bananas and did it for less time it could work. Haven’t tried it though.

They tasted good, but most of the cinnamon sugar stuck in the waffle iron.
    Not a fun clean-up.

I don’t have a waffle iron, but I have a George Foreman Grill. Do you think that would work?

Brilliant idea! I will definitely give this a try! Thanks so much

Fun idea! Might be a way to tempt my niece into eating more actual fruit. Have you thought about trying it with bananas? Slice them lengthwise (or across if you prefer), and they’d probably caramelize without any added sugar.

Heck, go all out, with waffled fruit salad, with grapes, strawberries, apples, bananas, and pineapple. Serve with a lightly sweetened sour cream or yogurt sauce.
