Nutella Banana Fruit Leather

What Is Fruit Leather?

Fruit leather is simply pureed fruit that is dehydrated on a sheet until it becomes a chewy snack. The store-bought version is often called a fruit roll-up since it easily rolls up for storage.

Banana fruit leather is made with pureed bananas. I add Nutella to mine. (If you have never sampled Nutella and banana together, go make a Nutella banana sandwich, understand the beauty behind this duo, and then come back and continue reading.)

What Tools Do You Need to Make Banana Leather

You’ll need either a food processor or a blender to make banana leather. You’ll use this to completely puree the bananas.

It’s helpful to have a dehydrator, but it’s not required.

What Are the Ingredients in This Nutella Banana Fruit Leather

One of the best things about making homemade snacks is that you get to control the ingredients. You need just two ingredients to make banana fruit leather with Nutella:

  1. Ripe bananas – Of course you need bananas. I suggest ripe ones, but you can microwave unripe bananas for 45 seconds or so to soften and sweeten them up.
  2. Nutella – You can use any chocolate hazelnut spread you like.

How to Make Banana Fruit Leather with Nutella

Just like with apple chips and other dehydrated food, you can make this recipe with or without a dehydrator.

Using a Dehydrator

  1. Blend or food process bananas and Nutella until smooth.
  2. Spread the mixture about 1/4″ thick onto parchment paper on dehydrator trays.
  3. Set your dehydrator to 4 hours at 125 F. The fruit leather is done when it is no longer sticky to the touch.

Using the Oven

  1. Blend or food process bananas and Nutella until smooth.
  2. Spread the mixture about 1/4″ thick onto parchment paper on cookie sheets.
  3. Set your oven to the lowest temperature it goes to (usually 170 F) and bake until it is no longer sticky to the touch – about three hours.

How to Store Fruit Leather

Without removing the fruit leather from the parchment paper, use scissors to cut the fruit leather into strips. Roll the strips and tie them with twine.

Alternatively, you could cut the sheets into cute shapes with cookie cutters and store them between pieces of parchment.

Store fruit leather in an airtight container for months. Because there is so little moisture, fruit leather lasts a really long time!

How long will they last for? And do you need to keep them refrigerated? Can’t wait to try this. Thanks!

They do not need to be refrigerated and I’m still eating some that I made almost a year ago and it’s still fine. That’s the beauty of dried fruit.
