Win a Silhouette Digital Cutting Tool Worth $300!! | Cupcake Project

Win a Silhouette Digital Cutting Tool Worth $300!!

This contest is now closed. The winner is: Sarah Elizabeth Borgnis!  Remember, if you didn’t win, you can still take advantage of the great deal Silhouette is offering to Cupcake Project readers.  See the details at the bottom of this post.

In grade school, I was a straight E student (our school used “E” for Excellent instead of the standard “A”). My only S (for “Satisfactory”) was in spelling (hooray for the invention of spellcheck!). However, if they gave out a grade in cutting, I would have gotten my only F.  As a lefty, I could never get the school’s scissors to cut – even the ones with colored rubber on the handles designating them for southpaws.

Recently, I’ve come across a few tutorials on how to make your own cupcake wrappers like the ones that I purchased from Sugar Cat Studio for Wedding 3.0.  They involved buying craft paper, printing a wrapper template on it, and then cutting it out.  I didn’t even bother trying.  I assumed that my wrapper would end up looking like a newspaper shredded by a cat’s claws.  I decided to leave cupcake wrapper making to the E+ cutters.

Things changed when I got an email from Shelly at How Does She asking if I would be interested in reviewing a Silhouette digital cutter.  Yes, please!  A digital cutter, for the uninformed (like I was), works like a printer – only instead of printing, it makes perfect cuts!  I cut the wrapper above using the Silhouette, and look what else I made:

Even though I am a complete non-crafter, I’m already thinking of other ways that I could use my machine: fancy cards, t-shirt designs (with vinyl transfer paper), scrapbooking, gift bags, and so much more.

You want one, don’t you?  Thought so! :)

Luckily, Silhouette gave me an extra one to give away!  Here are the details:

The giveaway includes:

A Silhouette Machine
(a $299.99 value)

And it also includes…

  • Software for Windows XP/Vista (Mac software will be available very soon)
  • Power cable, USB cable
  • 2 Cutting mats (one for thick media, one for thin media)
  • One cutting blade
  • $10 gift card to the Silhouette Online Store

To Win:

  • Visit the Silhouette website and the Silhouette blog.  Take a look around and be amazed at what this little machine can do.
  • Leave a comment on this post (one per person) telling me what you would make (I realize that not everyone would make cupcake wrappers).
  • For a second entry, become a Facebook fan and leave a comment on this post on Facebook.
  • For a third entry, follow cupcakeproject on Twitter and tweet the following “@cupcakeproject is giving away a $300 Silhouette digital paper cutter http://bit.ly/9lWzZO if I win, I’ll make ______.”"
The Fine Print:
  • The contest ends Saturday, Aug. 7 at 11:59 PM CDT.
  • The winner must reside in the United States.
  • The winner will be chosen randomly using random.org.
  • I will update this post with the winner and also contact the winner via email on Sunday, Aug. 8.  If I do not hear back from the winner within a week, I will draw a new winner.

I would TOTALLY make cupcake wrappers…a different one for every cupcake I do!

  2. Stephanie August 1, 2010 at 7:01 pm #

That is awesome!! I would totally make cupcake wrappers – I’ve always been tempted to buy them but I’m too cheap. I love the ones you made!

  3. AlyciAmore August 1, 2010 at 7:02 pm #

I would actually use this to make cut outs to place over a rice paper or vellum lamp shade. I think it would be a great way to revamp a boring old lamp. =)

Awesome giveaway Stef! I am not a baker… but I would use it in scrapbooking and sewing. WOW!

  5. Beth August 1, 2010 at 7:05 pm #

I would make some shirts for my son (often neglected in my craftiness!) and I would probably use it for some decorative wood signs.
Oh – and I would make cute cupcake wrappers too!!!

  6. Kristen August 1, 2010 at 7:06 pm #

I would make cupcake wrappers as I love to bake!

  7. Elsa (elsa.macbebekin@gmail.com) August 1, 2010 at 7:07 pm #

Oh, wow. I never thought I wanted one of these… and then you asked what I’d make.

I might make a few batches of cupcake wrappers, sure. I’d certainly make some larger craft-paper doilies for full-sized cakes and other goodies. But that’s just the beginning.

I’d make lots of cards: notecards, birthday and wedding cards, invitations. I’d make custom cards for my handmade jewelry. I’d make fancy labels for my handmade gifts and foodstuffs.

I might even take a whack at making a handmade lampshade.

This is an inspiring piece of equipment.

  8. Timeeka August 1, 2010 at 7:09 pm #

That looks amazing. I would use it in my scrapbooking projects.

  9. Monica C August 1, 2010 at 7:10 pm #

Besides using it to make cupcake liners(which would be so fun) I would use it to decorate things my kids may need for school projects to make them extra special!

  10. Katie August 1, 2010 at 7:13 pm #

I think it’d be easier to say what I wouldn’t use it for. These Silhouettes look amazing and there’s so so much you can use it for. By and large, though, I’d probably use it for vinyl transfers the most.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  11. RC August 1, 2010 at 7:15 pm #

Well, of course, cupcake wrappers! But I would also use it for scrapbooking!

This would be the best thing ever. Cupcake wrappers all the way!

  16. Kathryn August 1, 2010 at 7:27 pm #

I am an artist and amateur book maker. So, I would use the cutter for my artwork and book-making. xD
I do a surprising amount of precise paper cutting (a la x-acto blade), and it’s painstaking work. :P

  17. Becky August 1, 2010 at 7:27 pm #

I’d make the most kick-ass paper airplanes ever.

  18. Hannah August 1, 2010 at 7:34 pm #

The better question would be what WOULDN’T I MAKE? I work for a cupcake catering company, so this is obviously BEYOND awesome for wrappers. But I’d LOVE to use it for scrapbooking, as well as helping my sister make AWESOME wedding invitations. OH and it would make some TOTALLY cute cards to send to friends too!

  19. Jennifer Priest August 1, 2010 at 7:36 pm #

I’d scrapbook, make T Shirts, do vinyl wall art!!! The sky is the limit :)

  20. Cake Seduction, LLC August 1, 2010 at 7:37 pm #

I would use this for my labels and bundt displays. I also design and usually cut out my own invitations. This would be so helpful!

Would love to try some scrapbook page titles with this!

  27. 4 lil Monkeys August 1, 2010 at 8:09 pm #

I would make everything for my lil one’s parties! Between all of my many hobbies of papercrafts, it would essentially be the entire party! I Love making invites, and paper decoration banners and of course the super creative cupcake wrappers, because yes, I always serve cupcakes at their parties!

  28. Kate August 1, 2010 at 8:10 pm #

My sister just got engaged! I’m the crafty one in the family (also the poor college student) and she asked me to help make the invitations. AHHHH! So worried! If I had this machine, I could totally make perfect invitations for her. She totally deserves an amazing wedding. Maybe I could convince her have a cupcake tree for her wedding and use this again! There are so many things this can do for the wedding!

  29. Ari August 1, 2010 at 8:12 pm #

Oh my goodness, that thing is amazing. I’ve always seen them advertised at JoAnn’s, and I get jealous every time…

Aside from cupcake wrappers, I would also make stencils for painting my own t-shirts. One of the fashion groups I’m part of just posted a tutorial, and I thought how difficult it would be to cut out all the detailed parts–this would solve all my problems!

  30. Rachel August 1, 2010 at 8:14 pm #

I would make cupcake wrappers first thing, but I bet this would make awesome designs to frame photos with, or maybe even incorporate into the photos themselves.

  31. Yolanda August 1, 2010 at 8:18 pm #

I would use it to make many things including cupcake wrappers, wall decals, and pain stencils. Thank you for the opportunity!

  32. Humble Housekeeping August 1, 2010 at 8:18 pm #

cupcake wrappers for sure…but the glass etching feature seems very intriguing.

  33. Sandris August 1, 2010 at 8:24 pm #

I love the cool designs to make cards. I am also a non crafty person, but I would try and make that bouquet card. So cool!!

  34. Anna August 1, 2010 at 8:25 pm #

I would totally start with the cupcake wrappers and then tackle my growing collection of scrapbooking paper and maybe actually scrapbook…maybe

  35. Nappington August 1, 2010 at 8:59 pm #

Cupcake wrappers FOR SURE. Also doilies to served baked goods on, gorgeous cards and stationary, decor for my walls, one-of-a-kind business cards and stencils to paint…well, pretty much everything I own.

  36. Rachel August 1, 2010 at 8:59 pm #

Holy %&^*$ what wouldn’t I use it for?

But in all seriousness, love what they are doing with that fabric transfer stuff over on their blog. And cupcake wrappers. And paper and stationary and greeting cards and whatever I could possibly do.

  37. Xiaolu @ 6 Bittersweets August 1, 2010 at 9:03 pm #

I’d love to make not only cupcake wrappers but awesome food and gift tags and gift boxes with this. I’m really excited about this product. Makes me wish my birthday were coming up haha.

  38. alwaysarac August 1, 2010 at 9:08 pm #

I have two girls who love to do crafts, so the possibilities would be endless. Art projects for their rooms and cards for all the holidays….

    and of course, cupcake wrappers.

    alwaysarac(at)gmail(dot)com

  39. Kate August 1, 2010 at 9:18 pm #

I would use it to make layered holiday cards and super fun invitations/stationery à la Luscious Verde… and most likely some fun cupcake wrappers, among other things.

  40. Pam August 1, 2010 at 9:33 pm #

Gift Bags! Thank you for offering such a sweet giveaway!

    Molu1298@gmail.com

  41. Lexi August 1, 2010 at 9:35 pm #

  45. HEIMLAGA August 1, 2010 at 11:05 pm #

just to tell, the Silhouette only works with PC, not with MAC ;-)

  46. Teri August 1, 2010 at 11:08 pm #

I would go crazy making a ton of things with this machine. cards would be my number 1 thing I would use it for.

  47. Stef August 2, 2010 at 12:36 am #

HEIMLGA – I’ve been told that the Mac software should be available at the end of August.

  48. Heather L. August 2, 2010 at 12:39 am #

I could do so many things with that!

I like the idea of cutting out multiple silhouettes to make a paper mobile, or I would dip them in ceramic slip and mold them over something to create a bowl or sculpture. I’ve done it with doilies before and they’re turned out pretty neat!

  49. Rebecca August 2, 2010 at 1:52 am #

That’s such an amazing tool! I would make my mum very happy by filling her cardmaking cupboard with shapes for her to use!

  50. Pam (pamcakes and eggs) August 2, 2010 at 2:43 am #

Yeah I would probably make cupcake wrappers too or some cool cut out prints to frame and hang on the wall. I think I would have it cut out quotes and then glue them on a different color and then frame them. Can it do that??

  51. Clara Edwiges August 2, 2010 at 2:44 am #

    OMG that’s really awesome!!
I would do lots of stencils! T-shirts, bags, walls… The world is your canvas xD

  52. Cindy M August 2, 2010 at 2:46 am #

Hoo boy! Would I love to win a machine like this. I want to get into etching glass especially a few windows where I really don’t want curtains but I need some privacy. Then I’d be etching all kinds of glassware, creating wall stencils, putting patterns on textiles AND making awesome wraps for cupcakes. I really enjoy making marking special occasions for my co-workers with cupcakes.

  53. Sourkraut August 2, 2010 at 3:04 am #

In addition to cupcake wrappers, I’ve seen some neat decorations made for Kitchenaid mixers. Mine could definitely use some sprucing up.

  56. Katie August 2, 2010 at 4:33 am #

I would use this to make intricate thank you cards for my family & boyfriend. I am a printmaker and work with letterpress so the two art forms combined could be truly, awesomely, beautiful!

  57. Jacknbead@aol.com August 2, 2010 at 4:36 am #

First, I totally love your site! Thank you so much for taking the time to keep us informed!
Second, I love the cupcake wrappers but when I saw the things the Silhouetee Digital machine did with the fabric ideas, I was completely thrilled! My brain is already busy thinking of all the things I could do with the Silhouette machine, providing of course, I can handle the mechanical part of it— ha,,ha!

  58. katiebot5000 August 2, 2010 at 4:43 am #

I would love making cupcake wrappers, but I think the machine could also apply to other baked goods. Making doilies for presentation, intricate die cuts for cupcake toppers, borders, cards, you name it. From what I’ve read it’s an incredibly diverse machine.

  59. Lois August 2, 2010 at 4:47 am #

I would make cupcake wrappers but I don’t think I could stop there I would have to embellish a few T’s, make some cards, a few scrapbook pages, my the possibilities have my head spinning
    thanks

This machine looks so much more straightforward than the one I b…ought last year and still haven’t figured out how to use it or who to give it to.

    Elizabelle[at]comcast[dot]net

  89. TheYellowRose August 2, 2010 at 6:44 am #

Oh my goodness…what WOULDN’T I make? Cupcake wrappers for sure, but I’d also use it in scrapbooking, papercraft, stencils, all sorts of cards, invitations, gift tags, gift wrap, party decorations and favors, decorating my next apartment…the list goes on. I highly doubt I’ll win since I never win anything…but if I had to pick one giveaway to win…this would be it! :)

  90. Joanne August 2, 2010 at 6:52 am #

I’d use it to cut some vintage wallpaper and apply some light adhesive backing to create some temporary wallpaper! Very cool machine!

  154. kzwick August 2, 2010 at 11:44 am #

Wow. When I was in college one of my best friends would make cut out letters to wish people happy birthday. An adult in our dorm thought she had a “machine” to do it, even though the letters were different sizes and completely not uniform. I guess that adult was just a decade before his time. If I won this I would either (a) gift it to said friend or (b) make custom bday wishes for others in her stead.

  155. Kim August 2, 2010 at 11:47 am #

I would use this to make my invitation making a WHOLE lot easier! Thanks!

Holy cow, 158 comments already! well, i WOULD make cupcake wrappers with it the most, I’m sure, since I”m cupcake obsessed. I’ve always loved how cupcake wrappers make cupcakes look, but they are too expensive to buy all the time. I can imagine with scrapbook paper and this cutter I could make a gazillion different cupcake wrappers, which would pretty much be a dream come true in my cupcake obsessed world :)

Besides the obvious cupcake wrappers and doilies for the cakes, I’d love to use it to decorate walls in my house and in the newly started preschool starting this fall my kids are attending. Anyway, I’d love to be able to make the school feel like a home!

  300. skhouse August 2, 2010 at 8:20 pm #

What couldn’t I make? I would probably start with the Recipe Book I am making for my sisters of our Mom’s recipes( she passed away about 5 years ago), next I would move onto the Family history Scrapbook I am designing for my own children and siblings. Then I would move onto the boys room where I can put up wording and designs to motivate them everyday…they are teens and need some direction smetimes! Next onto the girls individually…wow I could go crazy here. My one daughter is totally focused on standards & values that are related to our church. I could use those words as a border around her room, or even on a frame she can have over her bed. The youngest girl isn’t too far behind her sisters footsteps yet is still into Nick Jonas! I could do a border of her favorite stars or singers around her room (she wants a rockin’ room) …oh I can also do something about that laundry room too! Like directions for the family as to where to put the colored, whites & lights when dragging it down instead of the big pile at the door! Oh the freedom this little gizmo can give me! Pick me Pick me!

  301. Stacey August 2, 2010 at 8:23 pm #

The possibilities are endless to what I can make. As a mom to 20 month old triplets, money gets tight and one needs to be creative and frugal! Lately I’ve been hooked on wall decals and there is so much inspiration out there. I want to customize their bedrooms with wall decals and hanging paper decorations. The boy will be all about automotive and the girls will have a woodland theme. Actually, I’ve been on my cupcake kick lately too and I’m all about really cool cupcake wrappers! I’ll be whipping up some this week for my cousin’s baby shower on Sunday – complete with cupcake picks too!
